Guide to Website Design for Small Businesses With Examples 2023

Narrowing down demographic focus is vital in the competitive e-commerce world. As you shop, you can browse by category or theme, making filtering relevant products that much easier. The jeweler even used web design functionality to make the top navigation menu opaque, so it doesn’t cut off the product header block's full-screen effect. This strategy gives the brand credibility and reputability in a relatively new field, personal protective equipment (PPE). Rendall Co. also includes a press section in the main header, making finding trusted sources easy for website visitors. These lead magnets are attractive to prospects while collecting email addresses for the company to then feed into newsletters and other email marketing campaigns.

What does a Squarespace subscription include?

Shopify provides a built-in SSL certificate, two-step verification, customer log-ins, and ensures your website is PCI compliant. The majority of these measures are offered by all major website builders, but we liked Shopify’s additional fraud analysis tool which helps small businesses recognize fraudulent orders. On the back end, Square Online provides all the tools a retailer might need to run their business, from inventory management to checking abandoned carts to orders reporting. If you use Square for in-person sales, you’ll find that the website reports integrated into Square are quite handy.

Create a Custom User Experience (UX)

We’ve shared our recommendations depending on your small business needs, but our top choice is Shopify. It offers a powerful all-in-one solution for small businesses, performing well across our research categories. It also has the best sales features out of all the builders we tested – we highly recommend this builder if you’re looking to sell online. Sunrise Integration is at the forefront of web design and development, leveraging cutting-edge technologies like React.js, Node, and Python.

eCommerce

A site with a basic template design and limited functionality won’t cost as much as a huge website with a lot of custom bells and whistles. You’ll have a greater ability to customize and more control over functionality, but the learning curve is also steeper, even if you’re using one of the many available templates. If your business also has a brick-and-mortar location, we’ve got you covered. With Location Management, you can create and manage online listings for your business’s physical location directly from your Squarespace site. An integration with Google My Business allows you to seamlessly update the address, contact information, and hours that appear for your business.

Can I create a website without knowing how to code?

According to web design best practices, website images in general should be no more than 2,500 pixels for full-screen images. And, always use JPEG formats, as they’re generally more compressed than PNG files. You probably already know that a picture can paint a thousand words, but did you know that websites with images get up to 47% more clicks than those without? Think of your navigation as a map that they can easily grab to find what they need.

Square Online is completely free if you just want to create your site and have it hosted at Square with a Square subdomain, as in mywebsite.square.site. The free version adds a discreet “powered by Square” footer that’s less in-your-face than Wix’s branding, which appears at the top of its free sites. To remove the branding and get access to site-traffic, sales, and marketing reports, you can pay for a plan; subscriptions start at $16 a month ($12 a month if billed annually).

Customers can browse products, manage their cart, and checkout all without ever leaving your store. Popular web hosts with and without built-in design integrations are Bluehost, DreamHost, GoDaddy and InMotion. You should highly weigh the SSL certificate as it’s a global standard security technology that enables a secure connection and protects your and your visitors’ data and sensitive information.

We’ve carried out in-depth research to bring you our top choices – and Shopify is the best small business website builder. One of the most compelling reasons to use WordPress (whether on WordPress.com or your own hosted version) is access to more than 50,000 plugins to customize and grow your website. To install other plugins while using WordPress.com, you need to upgrade to a Business or eCommerce plan; self-hosted WordPress sites don’t have that limitation. Adding pages, customizing background colors, and inserting components is straightforward, though different from other sites’ drag-and-drop approach.

Step 1: Plan Your Site

Unfortunately, you can’t reach out to GoDaddy via email – if this is a support channel you require, we suggest looking at Shopify or Squarespace. Despite this, we were particularly impressed by GoDaddy’s live chat response time. In addition to Wix’s SEO checklist, Wix provides a thorough SEO Learning Hub and access to the keyword research tool, Semrush. A recent addition to Wix’s SEO suite of tools is its AI Meta Tag Creator, freeing up your time by handing the task to AI. So, it’s no surprise that Wix scores a perfect 5 out of 5 in our SEO testing – with only Shopify sharing the same rating. We also think it’s worth mentioning Shopify Bill Pay, a new feature from our top-rated small business website builder that helps stores manage and pay business bills through Shopify’s dashboard.

Take the hassle out of online scheduling with tools to keep your clients happy and your calendar booked. Everything you need to run an ecommerce business, from payments and checkout to shipping and fulfillment. Whether it’s finding great products or discovering helpful advice, we’ll help you get it right (the first time). Editing web pages is as easy as selecting an item on the page and using the pop-up menu to format or customize it. The drag-and-drop interface allows you to move elements or resize them, although you don’t get as much control as you do with Wix. As you might expect, you can embed items from other Google apps, such as Google Calendar, Google Forms, and Google Maps.

This made us nervous during testing because it’s all too easy to close a tab by mistake or for a laptop battery to run out of juice mid-edit. Wix makes it easier to build an informative, attractive, and useful website than any of its rivals. For those who prefer to be more hands-on, Wix’s site-editing interface also offers the most control (aside from WordPress, which allows you to edit HTML directly) over the look of every element on a page. It provides the most built-in plugins to enhance a website, too, including search engine optimization (SEO), marketing, and accessibility tools. Work & Co, known for partnering with giants like Apple and Google, succeeds in digital product innovation and market growth strategies. Their expertise in creating impactful digital experiences and user-centric web designs positions them as a leader in driving online business success.

Ideally, you’ll have a plan to continue search engine optimization after your site is up and running. There are a lot of “free” or inexpensive website builders out there that will allow you to drag and drop your way to a basic website in no time. Websites for standard small businesses, personal use or portfolios can range from free to $20,000 upfront—or more, in some cases. Final and recurring costs are based on your web hosting package, add-ons, design, SEO and other customizations. For an average small business website, you can expect to pay between $4,000 and $10,000.

With a red, black, and white color scheme, in-your-face typography, and bold copy, the site supports its edgy brand image that it notes disrupts the status quo. Washable rug retailer Ruggable’s website is designed to help visitors find their perfect rug by shape, color, style, or function. Ruggable also curates its rug collections by theme—such as farmhouse, bohemian, and contemporary rugs—for an easy-to-navigate shopping experience. If a site takes too long to load or is slow to respond to user interaction, it can cause visitors to abandon their shopping carts—or worse, abandon your website altogether.

The key issue with social media is that you’re at the mercy of the platform’s rules and algorithms. Besides, you don’t OWN your presence on social media like you do with a site. For example, a platform can shut down your account if it believes you’ve violated its policies. Just make sure they are clean and attractive (ask your friends and colleagues to evaluate the latter). And I probably don’t need to tell you that the navigation must be intuitive and your site must be mobile-friendly because half of the web traffic is mobile. That’s especially relevant for online booking, e-commerce, or custom apps.

If you choose to hire a designer or design agency, a website could cost anywhere from $1,000 to more than $100,000. You’re likely to discover hidden fees along the way, especially if you want features like a custom domain name or Google Analytics tracking. Additionally, if you ever want to migrate your site off the website builder platform, it might not be possible. Their new custom website not only looked great, it provided a superior user experience due to its search and filtering system. With the updated site, it was easier and more intuitive for visitors to find their ideal vacation rental. For many potential customers, the first impression they have of your business is your website.

It also makes the audience interested in how it works compared to their own education system, particularly if they’re enrolled at one of the many public schools. While these groups are usually male or female, the houses at Hogwarts are co-ed. Such can be seen with long-time fraternity and sorority members of different universities. A more modern practice involves naming such houses after famous historical alumni or noteworthy regional topics.

Harry Potter House Traits And Characteristics

As stated previously, these subdivisions within Hogwarts each displays aspects of a particular founder’s traits and beliefs. Almost surprisingly, the series has developed in people an interest in the way education works. These details may just seem solely related to this fictional world if one isn’t familiar with these systems. Each of these four individuals wanted to bring certain aspects out of the students attending the institution. After the events in the main series, the Potters, Weasleys, and Longbottoms became much more famous and influential. Students are taken through learning various forms of spellcraft and magic, consisting of defending against evil magic, brewing potions, breeding animals, and much more.

Why Books Are Better Than Movies

If you’re driven, strategic, and unafraid to pursue your goals, you might find yourself right at home in Slytherin. It was a long, low underground room with rough stone walls and silver lamps hanging from the ceiling.[11] Famous Slytherins included Merlin, Tom Riddle,[24] Draco Malfoy,[4] and Dolores Umbridge. The significant object of Slytherin was Salazar Slytherin's locket, which was turned into a Horcrux by Tom Riddle. Hufflepuff corresponded to the element of earth.[2] The Hufflepuff dormitories and common room were located somewhere in the basement, near the castle's kitchens. The significant object of Hufflepuff was Helga Hufflepuff's Cup, which was [turned into a Horcrux by Tom Riddle. Distinctive traits for each House based on the first three authors’ readings of the Harry Potter books.

Of the 988 participants who took part in our study, 91 participants were excluded for not meeting the age criterion of 18 years, and one for indicating an age of 122. We removed 49 of the remaining participants as the Sorting Hat assigned them to multiple Houses, resulting in a total sample size of 847 (Table 3). The median age of the remaining participants was 23 with a standard deviation of 4.36. In the current study, we aim to address these limitations by conducting a replication of Crysel et al. (2015). On the other hand, Draco Malfoy, initially portrayed as a classic Slytherin with his arrogance and pure-blood pride, undergoes significant character development.

Traits of All Hogwarts Houses

The house of Hufflepuff values fairness and equality, promoting a sense of justice and acceptance. Hufflepuffs are known for their strong work ethic and dedication to their goals. They approach challenges with a positive attitude and a determination to succeed. Hufflepuffs create a warm and welcoming environment, where everyone feels valued and appreciated. Ravenclaw is characterized by its emphasis on intelligence, knowledge, and wit.

They are taught to value justice and fairness, using their courage to champion the rights of others. Gryffindors are not afraid to speak their minds and fight for what they believe in. Their boldness and determination make them natural leaders, inspiring those around them to be brave and stand up for what is right. In Gryffindor, students learn the importance of bravery and the power of standing up for their beliefs. The house encourages its members to be bold and fearless in the face of adversity.

Slytherins are taught to be resourceful and adaptable, using their skills to navigate the challenges they face and seize opportunities for success. Hufflepuffs possess a range of qualities that make them exceptional friends and allies. Their loyalty is unwavering, and they are always there for those they care about. Hufflepuffs are known for their kindness and empathy, understanding the importance of treating others with compassion and respect. They are patient and understanding, willing to listen and offer support to those in need.

The Hogwarts Houses: Traits and Identities

Luna, arguably the most recognizable character from Ravenclaw, is often seen as odd by her peers, but her unique perspective and willingness to embrace her individuality is a testament to the strength of Ravenclaw. Ravenclaw, founded by Rowena Ravenclaw, is known for its emphasis on wisdom, learning, and creativity. This pursuit of knowledge means that Ravenclaw is home to some of the most brilliant minds in the Wizarding World. In fact, this house produces the least amount of dark witches and wizards throughout its entire history. One of the main characteristics of this is ambition, along with resourcefulness, cunning, and leadership.

Hufflepuff

To them, hard work is usually all it takes, and they are often rewarded for it. They typically don’t follow the crowd or succumb to peer pressure—they do what they want to do, even if it involves flouting social conventions. Chances are good that they’re usually quiet during conversations, taking in everything that is being said.

Beyond the iconic trio, other Gryffindor members have showcased these commendable qualities. Neville Longbottom, despite starting off as a character plagued with self-doubt, displays immense courage by standing up to Voldemort, playing a vital role in the Dark Lord’s eventual downfall. I'm a playing cards collector, I love performing magic tricks and I'm also the owner of a small magic shop. Apart from that I like to explore different kinds of supernatural magic that we all have in our lives and I like to share what I learn... The cheery and amiable nature makes Hufflepuffs some of the most likable witches and wizards.

The Sorting Hat would only put you in this house if you demonstrated excellent wisdom, wit and a skill for learning. Ravenclaws are often known for being quite eccentric and most of the great wizarding inventors and innovators have come from this house. Gryffindor house is where you would find the pluckiest and most daring students (there’s a reason the house symbol is the brave lion). The house colours are scarlet and gold, the common room lies up in Gryffindor Tower and the Head of House is Professor Minerva McGonagall. Crysel et al. (2015) hypothesized that Gryffindor would score higher on Extraversion; Ravenclaw on Intellect; Hufflepuff on Agreeableness, Emotional Stability, and Conscientiousness; and Slytherin on Machiavellianism, Narcissism, and Psychopathy.

hogwarts house traits

By being well-informed, Ravenclaws can formulate well-thought-out opinions supported by facts and well-supported information. They don’t mind being alone, making them a little more cerebral or introverted than Gryffindors or Hufflepuffs. This gives them the chance to occupy themselves with books, theories, or their own thoughts, which allows them to enjoy their time for reflection and introspection. However, should a Ravenclaw want to talk, they want people to listen attentively and will get very upset if people don’t care for what they have to say.

While Gryffindor house values bravery, courage, and chivalry, their potential for impulsivity leads some of them to be bullies, reckless, and self-important. Gryffindors make good protagonists, and if you search through fantasy fiction, you’ll find many main characters from movies, books, and comics that possess Gryffindor traits. Think of Luna Lovegood, the quirky and imaginative Ravenclaw who saw the world through a unique lens. In Ravenclaw, intellect is cherished, and every question sparks a new adventure. Have you ever found yourself drawn to tales of daring quests and heroic acts? They are the ones who charge into battle without hesitation, fuelled by a strong sense of justice.

Being immersed in a fictional world may affect the individual’s behaviour, influencing readers’ views on social and emotional situations which are vicariously experienced through the situations, thoughts, and emotions of characters (Das, 2013). Mar and Oatley (2008) argue that such an immersion into a narrative has not just an entertaining function. Albeit on an abstract level, it exposes readers or viewers with social situations and provides them with social knowledge. As a simulation of how the world could be, the story can provide the reader or viewer with perspectives and knowledge that inform and influence their view of the real world. Gryffindor is notorious for housing many of the wizarding world’s most iconic, bravest heroes. Godric Gryffindor, Gryffindor’s founder, prided himself for selecting students who embodied the traits of courage, nerve, and chivalry to join his House.

What Is the Best Harry Potter Hogwarts House? Popularity, Achievements and Traits Examined

If they’re not careful, they can be easily tricked and taken advantage of. Additionally, since Hufflepuffs have a tendency towards modesty, they can sometimes fail to see their worth, leading to low self-esteem. At best, this can cause them to simply underestimate themselves, but at worse, it can cause severe problems such as a lack of self-confidence and self-worth.

Gryffindor house traits

Except, intellect found in Slytherins tends to lean towards leadership qualities and being mentally crafty. The Slytherin house traits in Harry Potter are ambition, resourcefulness, resolve, and cunning. The sorting hat‘s observations in the first Harry Potter movie, and the story’s Slytherin versus Gryffindor trend, led many to think house traits are cut and dry, but that’s untrue. Pack your things and head for Hogwarts, here are the Harry Potter house traits explained.

Hogwarts Houses Decoded

Demographic data collected included age, gender, country, education level, occupation, and native language, as well as data about participants’ experience with the Harry Potter franchise (i.e., the books and movies they have read or watched). Moreover, it’s worth noting that Slytherin’s key traits – ambition, cunning, and resourcefulness – are not inherently negative. When channeled appropriately, these traits can be powerful and lead to significant personal and professional achievements. Slytherins have a knack for strategic thinking and can navigate complex situations with their sharp minds, demonstrating that these traits, often misunderstood, can be a force for good. Slytherin House, founded by Salazar Slytherin, is often viewed through the lens of its darker affiliations, particularly due to characters like Tom Riddle, Bellatrix Lestrange, and Lucius Malfoy.

In conclusion, the Hogwarts Houses offer a fascinating glimpse into the diverse traits and identities of the students within them. From Gryffindor’s bravery to Ravenclaw’s wit, Hufflepuff’s loyalty to Slytherin’s ambition, each house has its own unique qualities that shape the characters in the Harry Potter series. These houses teach valuable lessons about courage, intelligence, kindness, and ambition, reminding us of the importance of embracing our own strengths and individuality. Whether you identify with Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or Slytherin, there is something to be admired and learned from each house’s traits and identities. The Hogwarts Houses in the Harry Potter series – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin – are known for their distinct traits and identities. Gryffindor values courage and bravery, Hufflepuff values loyalty and hard work, Ravenclaw values intelligence and wit, and Slytherin values ambition and resourcefulness.

Think of Harry Potter himself, a true Gryffindor, who fearlessly stood against the dark forces. Yes, it is possible for individuals to possess traits from multiple Hogwarts Houses. While the Sorting Hat assigns students to a specific House based on their dominant traits, it is important to remember that individuals are complex and can exhibit characteristics from different Houses. But that does not mean that other Houses hadn't produced any; Peter Pettigrew was a Gryffindor, and Quirinus Quirrell was a Ravenclaw.

Interesting Fact About Hogwarts Houses:

Gryffindor emphasizes typical heroic and fantastical knighthood traits, such as chivalry, courage, and daring. Being that Harry Potter was placed here, this is one of the most influential houses at Hogwarts. In the main story, this includes Minerva McGonagall as head of Gryffindor, Pomona Sprout as head of Hufflepuff, Filius Flitwick as head of Ravenclaw, and Severus Snape as head of Slytherin. At the end of the school year, the house with the most points wins the House Cup. Another example is the fact that many of Voldemort’s Death Eaters were placed in Slytherin during their time at school, including Tom Riddle himself.

Hufflepuff is where you will find the most trustworthy and hardworking students. In fact, out of all the houses Hufflepuff has produced the least number of dark witches and wizards. The badger is the symbol of this house, the colours are yellow and black, the Head of House is Professor Pomona Sprout and the common room can be found near the kitchens in Hogwarts.

Gryffindor: The House of the Brave

hogwarts house traits

Each house contributes its unique strengths and perspectives, fostering an environment of growth and camaraderie. Whether you find yourself in the company of courageous lions, loyal badgers, wise eagles, or ambitious serpents, remember that it is the combination of these diverse traits that makes Hogwarts truly magical. Gryffindors are often characterized by their willingness to stand up for what is right, even in the face of danger. Gryffindors are also known for their loyalty and devotion to their friends and loved ones.

hogwarts house traits

To them, being eccentric is acceptable—in fact, they welcome ideas that don’t necessarily conform to the status quo. They recognize that every person has a different way of thinking and rather than conforming to a singular train of thought; Ravenclaws welcome intellectual diversity and open-mindedness, making them the most inclusive Houses out of the four. Since Ravenclaws are big on reason and inclusivity, they are also highly intolerant of ignorance, ineptitude, and close-mindedness. As if the future were projected on a wall, they see in detail what the future might hold, and this detailed picture keeps pulling them forward, into tomorrow. They’re dreamers who see visions of what could be, making them drastically different from Slytherins who tend to look into the past instead. Ravenclaw house traits are learning, wisdom, wit, and intellect, making them the most studious.

The competitions between the students mean that some of the rivalries are quite intense, the one between Gryffindor and Slytherin being the greatest. Also, Quidditch is a type of sport that each house participates in and is similar to those popular in Britain such as football, rugby, and cricket. Sorting between one of the four is done at the beginning of the school year for all first-year students. Additionally, they represent the students’ living quarters as well as the communities they’re apart of.

So, whatever Hogwarts house you're in - see if you can find the connected words in today's puzzle. Wands purchased from Ollivander's Wand Shop can be used to perform "magic" at various indicated locations, using sensors that track the movements of the wands. While performing different "spells" from the Harry Potter universe, fans can produce different reactions, such as unlocking a cabinet, opening a box of candy (Chocolate Frogs), and forcing a ruler to lower itself. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a themed area at Universal Studios Hollywood theme park near Los Angeles. The area is themed to the Harry Potter media franchise, adapting elements from the film series and novels by J.K. The attraction—the second Harry Potter-themed area to exist at a Universal resort—was designed by Universal Creative from an exclusive license with Warner Bros.

But the houses aren’t just a way to divide students – they also provide a sense of community and belonging. Students work together to earn points for their houses throughout the year, and at the end of the school year, the house with the most points wins the House Cup. In fact, some of the most famous characters from the Harry Potter series belong to different Hogwarts houses. Harry Potter himself is a Gryffindor, while Hermione Granger is a proud Ravenclaw. Ron Weasley, on the other hand, is a loyal and brave Gryffindor, and Draco Malfoy represents the ambitious and cunning Slytherin house. These characters and their journeys through Hogwarts showcase the diversity and richness of each house’s traits.

Other examples include Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle, who despite being stupid and rather lazy, were placed in Slytherin, the House of the cunning and ambitious. They flocked around Draco Malfoy, who they admired and who exhibited the traits of Slytherin. Hermione Granger, while more than clever enough for Ravenclaw, valued courage above all, and was sorted into Gryffindor, a House she said sounded "by far the best". On each line, shows, for different personality traits, the posterior distribution of the proportion of variance explained by assuming four distinct Houses. Note that variance explained differs substantially between, say, Emotional Stability (EmStability) with 0.05% and Machiavellianism with 11.3%. The Harry Potter book and movie series, with their worldwide impact and fan base, have been an essential part of growing up for many children and adolescents.

However, their strong academic intellect does not necessarily define the Ravenclaw house —it is their desire to gain knowledge at every opportunity. Their thirst for knowledge is not just to fulfill their ambitions and achieve greatness but rather to gain knowledge for knowledge’s sake. That is not to say Ravenclaws are not ambitious—if anything, Ravenclaws and Slytherins have some overlap in terms of their values, which includes ambition. However, while Slytherins thrive on achieving greatness, Ravenclaws tend to desire to know the why of everything. They will do whatever it takes, whenever possible, to seek as much knowledge as they can. They would even be willing to take some risk if that means they have a chance of acquiring the knowledge they seek.

Since this aspect is such a significant part of the main series, it’s important to understand it if you want to fully understand the story. You can see that there’s more to the school of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter books and movies than you probably expected. They treat everyone as equals and values people no matter what family they come from. The members of Ravenclaw aren’t competitive with the other houses, especially compared to the rivalry between Slytherin and Gryffindor. This develops students that are highly talented in academics and different studies. However, sometimes it’s such an extreme that its members move towards a reckless and short-tempered nature.

A French native, Cliff moved to Washington State to pursue his journalism degree and then began publishing articles with Salish Current. With the Public Comment Period for Seattle’s Comprehensive Plan opening in October, the City is seeking input and feedback for community projects like the downtown revitalization. Their work has previously appeared in The Stranger, i-D, Netflix, and Feast Portland.

Last year The Urbanist wrote about ecoTHRIVE Housing’s innovative model for creating affordable housing in Burien. The plan has continued to advance forward and this year organizers are looking to the public for inspiration on how to design for resilience in their community. The Seattle Design Festival (SDF), formerly known as Design in Public, was founded in 2011 to celebrate all the ways that design makes life better for Seattle, and to nurture relationships among multidisciplinary designers, civic leaders, business innovators, community organizers, educators, artists, and activists. Because of the organizers commitment to ingenuity, even with a pandemic and recession to contend with, SDF leadership remains optimistic that this year’s festival live up to people’s expectations for the ten-year anniversary. The festival showcases the connections of our city to the natural world, like the immersive art piece, “Underwater,” presented by Olson Kundig and Dowbuilt, or the Cabinet of CuriosiBees, by Site Workshop, inviting visitors to see Seattle through bees’ eyes and build homes for these threatened urban species.

Near the entrance of the park, visitors were challenged to be “city planners for the day.” With simple post-it notes, residents wrote down their ideas and wishes for their neighborhoods and city organizing. This year, it also explores some of the city’s challenges, like the urban heat islands affecting residents disproportionately throughout the summer. The immersive installation, UNFOLD, presented by design firm Perkins+Will and GLY Construction, aims to help visitors visualize the ongoing issue of the heat island effect through long, flowing, coral drapes, proportionate to the experienced heat in Seattle’s neighborhoods. The 2023 Seattle Design Festival was August – exploring the them of CURIOSITY. The Call for Proposals were due May 25 – and we had over 90 partners engaging this year in 60+ installations, Pop-Up Experiences, Virtual Mainstage events and our Mixers. The Collaborative Design Swarm, hosted by ecoTHRIVE Housing, is one installation that should not be missed.

It is planned by a core group of dedicated volunteers, many of them emerging designers, who develop our Call for Proposals each year. All of the proposals brought forward by our community will be reviewed by the Festival Planning Team. This team will be looking for proposals that directly relate to the theme and demonstrate the relevance of design thinking, empower communities to leverage design, and promote a culture of collaboration. We prioritize accessibility as we plan all of our Festival events, and require all Festival Partners to prioritize safety, inclusivity, equity, and accessibility when designing their experiences. Respond to our Call for Proposals to be considered for the 2024 Seattle Design Festival. Each year, we release a call for proposals, and our community responds with experiences, events, exhibits, and installations that address it.

The Urbanist covered some of the designs recently in an article about the future of housing in Seattle, but visitors to the block party will be able to view the entire suite of their work. Per tradition, the festival will kick off with the Block Party, August 20-21, 10am-7pm, located at Lake Union Park next to the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI). Visitors to the Block Party can expect to see many different installations and pop up exhibits created by design teams ranging from architectural firms to nonprofit youth organizations like Coyote Central. It’s time to get ready for the 12th annual Seattle Design Festival, which will be held August at locations across the city. Through a broad range of events developed by our community partners, we are able to engage a diverse cross-section of the people that live, work, and play in our city. SDF believes that design is for everyone, and its benefits should be accessible, intersectional, and informed by a diverse public.

Now less than a year later, new energy and urgency surrounding the topics of racial inequality and civil rights have given the theme additional significance. Following the types of stacking, the neighborhoods were scored through a simple system that evaluated how well they would function and whether they prioritized their natural environments. Quinn-Smith said that the neighborhoods had come in all shapes and arrangements, with some designers vacating the street within the grid, creating a car-less neighborhood with a plaza space of stacked housing fronted with a library and a school. Festival goers immersed themselves in the concept of urban planning through family and curiosity-friendly activities like Environmental Works Community Design Center’s Sand Box City, a collaborative tiny town made of found objects. What kind of world do we want to emerge to as the shared experience of the Covid pandemic ebbs away? According to the event’s organizers, the question of what we want to emerge to, and not from, is central to why EMERGE was selected as the Seattle Design Festival’s theme for the 2021.

The Amityville Murders

On the night of November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. took a high-powered rifle and murdered his entire family as they slept. At his trial, DeFeo claimed that "voices" in the house commanded him to kill. The demonic forces in the Amityville house transfer to an ancient lamp, which finds its way to a remote California mansion where the evil manipulates a little girl by manifesting itself in the form of her dead father. A reporter moves into the Amityville house in defiance of the supernatural events connected to it, and finds everyone around him besieged by the evil manifestations which are connected to a demonic presence in the basement. By mid-January 1976, after another attempt at a house blessing by George and Kathy, they experienced what would turn out to be their final night in the house. The Lutzes declined to give a full account of the events that took place on this occasion, describing them as "too frightening".

Kaplan went on to write a critical book titled The Amityville Horror Conspiracy with his wife Roxanne Salch Kaplan. On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his family at 112 Ocean Avenue, a large Dutch Colonial house situated in a suburban neighborhood in Amityville, on the south shore of Long Island, New York. He was convicted of second-degree murder in November 1975 and sentenced to six terms of 25 years to life in prison. A VHS version was released the same day and was the final Dimension film released on VHS. Paramount Pictures (via Miramax) handles the digital distribution rights, including its own logo (though Warner Bros. Home Entertainment handles the home media distribution rights to the film in some countries along with the rest of MGM's post-April 1986 library[12]). The film was released in the United States on April 15, 2005, by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and Dimension Films.

The Amityville Horror (2005 film)

The children look for Harry the next day, with George denying he knows where he is, despite Billy's suspicions. One year later, a married couple George and Kathy Lutz move into the house along with Kathy's three children from a previous marriage, Billy, Michael, and Chelsea. Chelsea claims that she has befriended a girl named Jodie, a name belonging to one of the murdered DeFeo children. The demonic forces in the haunted Long Island house escapes to a remote home where it encounters a struggling family living together by uncertain means. Researchers Rick Moran and Peter Jordan rejected the claim of cloven hoof prints in the snow on January 1, 1976.

The Amityville legend lives on when a resident of a local boarding house dies under mysterious circumstances.

(1993 Video)

In 1974, real-life mass murderer Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed six members of his family at the same house in Amityville, New York. MGM claimed the remake was based on new information uncovered during research of the original events, but George Lutz later claimed nobody ever spoke to him or his family about the project. When he initially heard it was underway, his attorney contacted the studio to find out what they had in the planning stages and to express Lutz's belief they didn't have the right to proceed without his input. Although the film is set on Long Island, it was shot in Chicago, Antioch, Buffalo Grove, and Fox Lake, Illinois, and in Salem and Silver Lake, Wisconsin. The house used is a real 1800s home that was temporarily converted to add the famous quarter moon "eye" windows.

Their investigation revealed that there had been no snowfall at that time.[2] No neighbor reported anything unusual during the time that the Lutzes were living there. Police officers are depicted visiting the house in the book and 1979 film, but records showed that the Lutzes did not call the police.[13] There was no bar in Amityville called The Witches' Brew at the time. The film was released on DVD and UMD in separate widescreen and fullscreen editions on October 4, 2005. Kathy asks the priest Father Callaway to bless the house, as a protective measure to prevent any future paranormal incidents, but Father Callaway flees the house when he encounters such occurrences himself. Kathy discovers that the house once belonged to a cult preacher named Reverend Jeremiah Ketcham, whose evil actions towards Native Americans during his "mission" in 17th-century Amityville are said to be the cause of the haunting. Meanwhile, as George is walking through the basement of the house, he encounters the apparitions of the various Native Americans who were tortured and killed there by Ketcham centuries ago.

Audience Reviews

A city haunted by a bloody past has led to the emergence of some serious police brutality. As bodies pile up, two detectives seek to stop a demonic force that is terrorizing the neighborhood. A cursed, antique toy monkey from the original DeFeo home wreaks havoc and possesses a father after being gifted during the annual family reunion.

The 1979 film, based on Jay Anson's novel, is the best known in the series. The part of the priest who blesses the house (renamed Father Delaney in the film) was played by Academy Award–winning actor Rod Steiger. The first three Amityville films received a theatrical release, while the fourth film was made for television by NBC. The sequels from the 1990s were released direct to video and contain virtually no material relating to the Lutz family or the DeFeo murders.

He arrived to perform the blessing while George and Kathy were unpacking their belongings on the afternoon of December 18, 1975, and went into the building to carry out the rites. When he flicked the first holy water and began to pray, he heard a masculine voice demand that he "get out". When leaving the house, Father Mancuso did not mention this incident to either George or Kathy.

When a new family moves to an old house in Amityville, they are tormented and tortured by an evil spirit living in the home while trapped by the malicious townspeople who want to keep them there. One of the better known features of the Amityville Horror films is the distinctive jack-o'-lantern-like appearance of the house, which was created by two quarter round windows on the third floor attic level. The windows are often illuminated in the films, giving the appearance of menacing eyes. The first three films were filmed at a house in Toms River, New Jersey which had been converted to look like 112 Ocean Avenue after the authorities in Amityville denied permission for location filming. Although not all of the films in The Amityville Horror series are set at the former Lutz home on Ocean Avenue, the distinctive Dutch Colonial house is traditionally used as the main image in promotional material.

However, WBL settings are characterized by their unpredictable nature, which can either promote self-directed learning or present challenges in offering structured learning opportunities for students [12]. Consequently, designing purposive feedback opportunities within WBL settings is a significant challenge for clinical teachers and faculty. A medical device designer is responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and refining medical devices that address specific healthcare needs. They also focus on user-centric design, ensuring that the device is intuitive and user-friendly for both medical professionals and patients. A medical device design agency is a professional service organization that specializes in the design and development of medical devices and healthcare technology.

Health professionals can provide insights into health care operations and, most importantly, patient needs and experiences. These perspectives represent a unique opportunity for architects to experience the world of clinical medicine in a way that is typically hidden. We can walk the halls; we can talk to physicians and other clinicians; we can shadow individuals as they go about their daily routines.

It can help to find community with meetup groups like Hearing Loss Association of America, which has a chapter in the Twin Cities. Volume can still be part of the problem — it becomes harder to hear softer high-frequency sounds like “s” and “t”, and the crispness of high musical notes. But more importantly, it becomes harder to separate two sounds that are going on at the same time. A younger person with typical hearing can listen to one person even if five other people are talking.

The ideas included a new shape to prevent the device being positioned incorrectly, reflecting feedback from nurses about accidental injuries they had incurred when using the existing design. Other ideas were about improving the grip, making the device easier to use for patients with limited dexterity or impaired vision, and providing feedback when the device was used correctly. The executive team hailed these refinements as “completely game changing,” and over the first three years the redesigned device exceeded market growth by 4 percentage points. At DeviceLab, our adherence to ISO and the principles of risk management underscores our commitment to excellence, delivering medical devices that are not only compliant, but epitomize the highest standards of safety and quality for our clients. Quality management is more than just a checkbox to us, it’s an essential part of our commitment to patient safety and effective treatment solutions at DeviceLab. We incorporate quality management into every phase of the medical device design procedure to attain ideal outcomes.

Medical Device Project Spotlight

For those aiming for leadership roles or specialized research positions, a master’s or doctoral degree in biomedical engineering or a related discipline can be beneficial. Additionally, coursework or training in regulatory affairs and quality management can enhance one’s expertise in the field. Beyond prototyping, DeviceLab offers pilot production of medical devices, typically ranging from dozens to thousands of units, using materials and processes akin to full-scale production. At DeviceLab, we recognize the profound significance of risk management in medical device design. Beyond mere regulatory compliance, our dedication stems from a genuine commitment to patient safety and product excellence.

In summary, although the recommendation is to include a “next step” box in the feedback instruments, evidence shows these items are not often used for constructive comments or action plans. The front line of health care is among the most complex and high-stakes environments of any profession. Medical professionals are constantly looking for ways to clarify purpose and simplify processes to ensure best patient care. As our designs for buildings get more and more complex—code requirements, new materials, emerging technology—health professionals may find their most valuable service is helping bring clarity and focus to what really matters most.

Medical Device Design & Engineering

This results in a great deal of confusion about what design actually is, who practises it and how. This chapter therefore discusses the fundamental differences between how engineers and designers approach problems. It measured system usability scores of competitor products, and then set its own target score far higher, to ensure that the equipment could be marketed as having the lowest user-driven error statistics in the industry. It incentivized the team working on the product to hit these usability scores through a combination of financial rewards and non-financial recognition. From the initial design phase to post-market surveillance, risk management is an ongoing effort to ensure the safety and efficacy of medical devices.

Products and services

In this regard, it is described that delivering feedback without perceiving changes, results in no effect or impact on learning [88]. To determine if a feedback loop is closed, observing a change in the student's response is necessary. In other words, feedback does not work without repeating the same task [68], so teachers need to observe subsequent tasks to notice changes [88]. While feedforward is fundamental to long-term performance, it is shown that more research is needed to determine effective actions to be implemented in the WBL environment to close feedback loops. In summary, the clinical context and WBL culture do not fully use the potential of a feedback process aimed at closing learning gaps.

I’ve written about one of my biggest design influences, Dieter Rams, before in Insight and feel that once again medical product designers can learn much from his approach to design. To design medical devices, a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field is typically required. However, given the interdisciplinary nature of the field, degrees in electrical engineering, materials science, or even industrial design can also be relevant.

By testing these human factors with prototypes, we can receive real-time responses and reactions to potential design directions. RKS has a full prototyping lab in-house, that includes CNC machining, 3D printing, and AR/VR capabilities. RKS has the ability to support prototyping needs at all levels to facilitate the development process. Oftentimes our team is engaged early to create fast-fail feasibility prototypes and proof of concept prototypes to develop and test new features and functionality. This is typically where innovation and patent creation takes place and is instrumental in the development process. RKS also develops ergonomic and usability prototypes to support testing with users to validate approaches.

As such, many teams now include members across multiple disciplines and with experience in diverse building typologies to realize a more innovative design solution. Every medical device’s route to market is complex due to the various factors to be taken into consideration such as usage patterns, material, user experience, regulations, and more. The International Organization for Standardization also has specifications for medical device standards. ISO and ISO are widely used standards across the world for medical device quality management. Other than these international standards, certain standards are region-specific and all of them are adopted from international standards with little modification and limitation. I’ve taken a fresh look at these ten principles and reflected on their relevance to the sector we serve — medical products design and development.

RKS is a full-service design and development firm, and we provide materials sourcing, manufacturing support, and product management as part of our key service offerings. RKS’ level of involvement in the manufacturing process varies and is typically controlled by the needs of our clients. Many times RKS is engaged to manage the transition to manufacturing which includes identifying, evaluating, and negotiating with potential manufacturing partners. From there, RKS will manage the tooling process, part evaluation, debugging, and all critical steps to get to product launch. RKS can also play a support role for clients who want to manage the process or has internal manufacturing capabilities as needed by the client team.

Almost two-thirds of those who secure employment enter jobs typically available to people with little or no education, such as waste management, manufacturing, and construction—jobs increasingly being automated or outsourced. A central cause of mass incarceration, data shows that an estimated 68% of people released from U.S. jails or prisons were arrested within three years between 2005 and 2014, rising to 83% within nine years. DIY Hand-Painted Modern Birdhouses

birdhouse design paint

You can either paint or stain a birdhouse, depending on your personal preference. However, if you choose to stain the birdhouse, make sure to use a non-toxic, water-based stain that is safe for birds. To get a brilliant finish, many people choose to combine multiple kinds of paint together. When choosing paint, look for water-based paints that are specifically designed for outdoor use and are safe for birds. The Icy Pastel Birdhouse Christmas Village is perfect for those who want to add a touch of magic and winter wonderland to their garden.

Painting a birdhouse is not just always about the birds! To paint the bluebonnets, load your palette with phthalo blue and titanium white. Paint small “cupped” strokes in clusters of 2, 3 or four.

However, since I used Premium Matte Acrylics on parts of the birdhouse, I decided to give the entire thing a coat of DecoArt’s DuraClear Varnish in Satin. I figured the added protection wouldn’t hurt the Premium Satin Acrylics. The Premium Matte Acrylics come in 257 ready-to-go shades that offer fab coverage on virtually all surfaces. The finishes are permanent and durable, designed for professional artists and hobby crafters alike. They are water-based and non-toxic, so you can use a simple soap-and-water cleanup while paint is still wet.

If there are any cracks or crevices in the birdhouse, use a putty knife or other tool to fill them in before painting. To start, use a wire brush or sandpaper to remove any dirt, dust, or debris from the birdhouse. Now and then, when you are cleaning out the birdhouse, check for chipped or damaged paint. Painting the outer surfaces of a birdhouse can offer some protection to the wood against the elements.

Using craft paints?

If you’d like to use the birdhouses outside, you’ll want to use an Outdoor rated paint. My choice for paints are FolkArt Outdoor or Multisurface. If you’re planning on re-painting with light colors, you’ll want to prime first with something like acrylic paint or Kilz. Finish off the design by adding some straw or hay around the entrance hole. Painting birdhouses is a fun and creative way to add some personality and charm to your backyard or garden. Before you begin painting, it’s important to prep the surface. Sand the birdhouse to create a smooth and even surface for the paint to adhere to. Then, wipe the birdhouse down with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris. While we hope they’re safe, homemade arty birdhouses tend to be dangerous.

Paint your birdhouse to look like a whimsical chicken coop using acrylic paint and stencils. The birds in your yard will love making their nest in this colorful abode. Grab those old paint chips out of the drawer and decorate birdhouses with them! You're going to pick the palette of your birdhouse based on the colors of paint chips, which is pretty fun. To create the pedestal, glue three candle cups together and use a small canvas as a base.

Birdhouses should be painted with camouflage colors like gray, green, and brown that suit their natural environment and keep the birds safe. Bright-colored paint should not be used as it can attract unwanted attention from predators. Choosing the perfect painted bird house to add a delightful touch to your garden doesn’t have to be a challenge. Additionally, bright colors should be avoided as they can draw unwanted attention and attract predators.

While heat pump systems offer efficient heating and cooling, their major disadvantage lies in their reduced efficiency during extremely cold temperatures. As the outdoor temperature drops significantly, Season Control’s heat pump systems may need to work harder to extract heat from the air. This could result in lower heating efficiency and potentially higher energy consumption.
